Guelph’s two local boards both reach well beyond the city, so a policy that applies board-wide may have been written for Mount Forest or Orangeville as much as for Guelph. Anything that matters to you is worth confirming at the level of the specific school.

The city’s licensed child care sits mostly in the established areas rather than the newest subdivisions, and demand does not follow the student calendar even though the rental market does. Waiting lists are the norm; start them before you need a space.

An address is assigned to a school by the board, not by distance

The nearest school building is often not the assigned one. Boards publish address lookups; use them for the specific address you are considering, before you sign. This site publishes school profiles, never attendance boundaries — a boundary we cannot verify is worse than none.

A child care licence is not a space

Ontario’s register lists licensed facilities. It says nothing about vacancies, fees or waiting lists, which is what actually determines whether a place works for you. Contact operators directly, early.

Two local boards, plus the French-language boards

The Upper Grand District School Board runs the public schools and the Wellington Catholic District School Board runs the Catholic ones. Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir operate French-language schools that serve a much wider area than the city itself.

Upper Grand covers Guelph, Wellington County and Dufferin County, so board-wide information often describes a far larger area than the city — check anything that matters at the school level rather than the board level.

Child care and the university calendar

Demand for licensed child care in a university city does not follow the same seasonal pattern as student housing, but supply is still tight. The register on this site lists licensed facilities and where they are — it cannot tell you about vacancies, so contact operators directly and expect waiting lists.

If a before- or after-school programme matters to you, ask both the school board and the operator: those programmes are run separately from the school day and their availability varies school by school.
